Volunteering

The main function of our volunteers is to develop relationships with members within the setting of our Centre to help them develop their social skills and confidence. Volunteers need to be warm and friendly to a wide variety of people, and sensitive to their sometimes inconsistent behaviour. In addition to activities such as scrabble, pool, card games and bowls, the volunteers assist in preparing the room and refreshments for members.

We have over 100 members, however there are not normally more than 32 members at any one session. Primarily our members have lived experience of mental illness, but some are simply lonely people in need of some quality time with a friendly person. Occasionally members have displayed behaviours indicating their unhappiness, but there are always a number of experienced volunteers at the session to adequately handle any disruptions.

While we like volunteers to commit to one of the four weekly sessions on a regular basis, we appreciate all volunteer input. We are aware that members greatly appreciate the time spent and the friendly trusting relationships developed with the same volunteers each week.

We use the Sydenham Bowling Club, 230 Brougham Street and session times are Monday to Thursday 12.00 noon to 3.00 pm. Occasional help with outings is also appreciated. Supervision is provided by the daily Session Co-ordinator and training is on-the-job with some occasional training meetings on specific topics.

If you are a friendly person who enjoys the company of others; if you can listen to a member’s story while enjoying a cup of coffee with them, then you are the person needed. It is a bonus if you can play scrabble or pool and would like to join in picnics, barbecues and celebrations.

Please phone 03 366 9159 during session times, or call in to a session and speak to the Session Co-ordinator who will give you a Volunteer Information Pack. Otherwise, you can download a copy of the form below.
